How does Safe Place work?
If you are having problems at home, suffering from abuse or neglect, lost or in some dangerous situation, with a drunk or unsafe driver, or just need to talk about a problem, the nearest Safe Place site can connect you directly with resources to help.
If you're a youth in crisis, getting help from a Safe Place is simple. Tell an employee who works there you are there because of the Safe Place sign. They have a safe, comfortable place for you to wait while a representative from Idaho Youth Ranch comes to meet with you. A representative will arrive within 30 minutes and help you decide what you want to do. They will meet with you and offer support, a place to stay, transportation or other resources as needed.
Safe Place locations are designated by their signature black and yellow diamond-shaped signs displayed on local business and organizations around town. Idaho Youth Ranch will work with select local businesses, schools, fire departments, and police departments to expand the number of Safe Place locations available to youth with more locations being added all the time.

About Safe Place
Idaho Youth Ranch’s Safe Place initiative is part of a national network of Safe Place programs in 40 states and the District of Columbia. Nearly 22,000 community businesses and organizations nationwide display the yellow Safe Place sign, making help readily available for youth. Safe Place locations include Idaho Youth Ranch Stores throughout the Treasure Valley and will soon be expanding to businesses & public places.
It is estimated over one million youth run away from home each year due to abuse, neglect, family conflicts and other issues. The Safe Place program is an option for young people who feel they have nowhere to turn. In its last report in 2018, United States Interagency Council on Homelessness found that over 8,000 Idaho students were homeless. While most stay with friends or relatives or live-in motels, more than 400 were found to be unsheltered.
The Safe Place program has helped more than 330,000 youth since its inception in 1983 and currently serves more than 1,478 communities across the country.
National Safe Place Network also operates TXT 4 HELP, a 24/7 text-for-support service for youth in crisis. Teens can text the word “safe” and their current location to 4HELP (44357) and receive a message with the closest Safe Place location and the number for the local youth shelter. Users also have the option to text interactively with a mental health professional for more help.
