Youth Care Providers at Idaho Youth Ranch are the most consistent adult presence in the lives of the youth we serve. Not the therapist they see a few times a week. Not the case manager coordinating their discharge. You, the person who is there when they wake up, when they struggle, when they have a hard night, and when they make a breakthrough they didn't think was possible.
This is direct care work. It is demanding, meaningful, and unlike most jobs you've considered. Idaho Youth Ranch offers two YCP settings, each with its own rhythm, population, and kind of impact. Read through both to find where you fit.

Where you'd work

YCP - Residential Center
Caldwell, Idaho. Intensive residential care for youth with complex behavioral health needs
The Residential Center is Idaho Youth Ranch's licensed behavioral health residential facility. The youth here are navigating significant mental health challenges, trauma histories, and behavioral health needs that require structured, intensive care. As a YCP at the Residential Center, you are with these youth throughout their day, not observing from a distance, but present alongside them in every activity, transition, and difficult moment.
You are a formal member of the treatment team. Your observations, your relationships with youth, and your ability to implement trauma-informed care strategies directly inform clinical decisions. Therapists and case managers rely on what you see and report. Your role isn't adjacent to the clinical work. It's woven into it.
What your day includes:
- Accompanying youth throughout all daily activities, providing a continuous, stabilizing presence
- Supporting youth during morning routines, meals, school, structured activities, and evening wind-down
- Attending classes with youth at Promise Academy, Idaho Youth Ranch's on-site charter school, providing support and consistency in the academic environment
- Implementing trauma-informed de-escalation and care strategies in real time
- Documenting observations and contributing to treatment team communication
- Participating in team handoffs, shift briefings, and coordination with clinical staff
Schedule:
8-hour shifts: Days (7am to 3pm), Swing (3pm to 11pm), and Overnights (11pm to 7am). YCP positions are available in each of the three shifts.

YCP - Hays House
Boise, Idaho. Emergency shelter for youth in crisis
Hays House is Idaho Youth Ranch's emergency youth shelter, a safe, stable, short-term home for young people who have nowhere else to go. The youth here are in crisis: they may have run from unsafe home situations, been placed by the state, or arrived with very little notice and a great deal of uncertainty. Your role is to provide the kind of calm, consistent presence that makes a frightening situation feel safer.
The YCP role at Hays House is centered on guidance, oversight, and connection. You'll help youth navigate daily life at the shelter, school transportation, meals, activities, homework, and the general structure that keeps a crisis environment from feeling chaotic. The youth here have shorter stays than at the Residential Center, which means your impact is often concentrated into a smaller window and expressed through consistency and care during an acute moment.
What your day includes:
- Transporting youth to and from school and appointments
- Overseeing daily activities, meals, homework time, and evening routines
- Providing consistent, caring oversight that helps youth feel safe in an unfamiliar environment
- Guiding youth through shelter expectations and daily structure
- Communicating observations and relevant information to the broader team
- Responding thoughtfully to the varied needs of youth who arrive in different states of crisis

The settings are different. The foundation is the same. Every YCP at Idaho Youth Ranch is expected to bring these things to the work — and in return, Idaho Youth Ranch is committed to supporting you in doing it well.
Trauma-Informed Care
Idaho Youth Ranch's approach to working with youth is grounded in trauma-informed principles. That means understanding why youth behave the way they do, responding with consistency and empathy rather than reaction, and recognizing that challenging behavior is almost always a communication about an unmet need. YCPs receive training in these principles and are expected to apply them, not as a technique, but as a way of being present with the youth in your care.
Training and Ongoing Support
You don't need a background in behavioral health or social work to start this role. Idaho Youth Ranch provides comprehensive onboarding training including trauma-informed care principles, de-escalation approaches, safety protocols, and the specific expectations of your setting. Ongoing supervision and team support are part of the job, not an afterthought.
A Real Team
YCPs don't work in isolation. At the Residential Center, you're embedded in a clinical treatment team. At Hays House, you're part of a shelter care team with shared responsibility for the youth in your building. Either way, you have colleagues who understand what the work asks and supervisors who are invested in your success.

What to expect
Schedule
The Residential Center uses 8-hour shifts: Days, Swing, and Overnights. Hays House schedule structure is to be confirmed before launch.

What we're looking for
Required Qualifications
- Must be 21 years of age or older
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid Idaho driver's license, or ability to obtain one within 15 days of hire
- Genuine interest in and commitment to working with youth who have experienced adversity
- Emotional steadiness and composure in unpredictable or high-stress situations
- No prior behavioral health or youth care experience required, Idaho Youth Ranch provides full onboarding training
