Shift Supervisor is the role for experienced residential care workers who are ready to take on leadership responsibility, without stepping away from the youth they came to serve. You'll oversee Youth Care Providers during your shift, keep the milieu running with consistency and safety, and remain actively present with the youth in your care. This isn't a desk job. It's a leadership role that happens in the building, on the floor, and in the moments that matter.

This position is at Idaho Youth Ranch's Residential Center for Healing and Resilience, a licensed Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility serving youth with complex trauma histories and significant mental & behavioral health needs. If you've been doing direct care work and you're ready for the next step, this may be where you belong.

The work, honestly described

As a Shift Supervisor at the Residential Center, you carry two responsibilities simultaneously: leading the Youth Care Providers on your shift and remaining a direct, active presence with the youth in your care. These aren't separate tracks. They're woven together across every shift.

You're the person YCPs look to when a situation escalates, when a decision needs to be made, or when the shift needs to be reoriented. You set the tone for how your team shows up, and through your team, you shape the experience of every youth in the building during your hours. That's a real responsibility, and it's one that experienced residential care workers are often ready for before they realize it.

You'll work the same 8-hour shift schedule as YCPs: Days, Swing, and Overnights. You report to the Residential Manager and serve as the primary operational point of contact during your shift.

Acute situations will occur and will reshape your shift. Your role in those moments is both operational, ensuring proper protocols are followed, staff are deployed correctly, and escalation pathways are activated when needed, and relational, modeling the kind of steady, trauma-informed response that de-escalates rather than inflames.

Wherever you work, this is what you’re signing up for

The settings are different. The foundation is the same. Every YCP at Idaho Youth Ranch is expected to bring these things to the work — and in return, Idaho Youth Ranch is committed to supporting you in doing it well.

The Youth Care Providers You'll Supervise

Your primary leadership responsibility is the YCPs on your shift. You'll oversee their work in real time, support them when situations are difficult, hold them to Idaho Youth Ranch's standards of trauma-informed care, and play a meaningful role in their development as residential care workers.

The Residential Manager

You report to the Residential Manager, who provides operational and leadership oversight for the residential program. The Shift Supervisor role is the primary leadership layer between YCPs and the Residential Manager. You're the operational point of contact during your shift, and your Residential Manager is your escalation path for situations that exceed your authority or require broader organizational response.

The Clinical and Nursing Teams

Shift Supervisors work in close coordination with therapists, clinical supervisors, and nursing staff. Not as a clinical role, but as an operational partner who ensures the residential environment supports clinical goals.

The Youth

You remain actively involved with youth throughout your shift. Not at the distance of pure administration, but present in the milieu, available for direct interaction, and modeling the relational approach you expect from your team.

Why this step up is worth taking

Shift Supervisor is a genuine leadership role, not a YCP position with extra paperwork. Here's what makes it a meaningful career step for the right person.

  • Direct supervisory responsibility that develops real leadership skills in a complex, high-stakes environment
  • You stay close to the youth. This isn't a role that moves you behind a desk
  • Rotating shifts mean your leadership spans the full life of the residential program, not just business hours
  • Clear reporting structure with a Residential Manager who is invested in your growth
  • A natural pathway for experienced YCPs ready for the next step without leaving residential care
  • A setting where your judgment, steadiness, and example genuinely shape the experience of both staff and youth
  • A mission-driven organization with 70 years of serving Idaho's most vulnerable youth
