When a stepparent adopts their stepchild, they assume full custody of their spouse’s child, and in turn, the spouse and now non-custodial parent is legally released from all parenting responsibilities.

Adoption Home Study

This is a common form of adoption, but most court jurisdictions Idaho still require that an adoption home study be completed when a stepparent petitions to adopt their stepchild. A home study is a social investigation that is compiled into a report for the adoption process. You can learn more about what a home study looks like here

While the petitioner/stepparent is the main subject of this home study, depending on the age of the stepchild in question, the petitioner’s entire family may be involved in the home study process.

Our team has been conducting home studies since 1983, and our specialists are highly experienced in navigating the challenges you might face in a stepparent adoption.
