When a stepparent adopts their stepchild, they assume full custody of their spouse’s child, and in turn, the spouse and now non-custodial parent is legally released from all parenting responsibilities.
Adoption Home Study
This is a common form of adoption, but most court jurisdictions Idaho still require that an adoption home study be completed when a stepparent petitions to adopt their stepchild. A home study is a social investigation that is compiled into a report for the adoption process. You can learn more about what a home study looks like here.
While the petitioner/stepparent is the main subject of this home study, depending on the age of the stepchild in question, the petitioner’s entire family may be involved in the home study process.
