EAP: the Healing Power of Horses at IYR

At the Idaho Youth Ranch, equine therapy is available to children and families who participate in any of our programs and services, not only kids in residential care. That includes family therapy, group and individual counseling, short-term crisis relief, even adoption services--because it gets such great results.

One of the key ingredients to a promising future is a sense of belonging and feeling connected to others and valued for what you have to offer. That’s why volunteering, or what we call service learning, is such an important part of treatment at IYR.

Harvest at Hays House

Last April, staff and kids at Hays House moved the backyard garden to a sunny spot beside the greenhouse and built three new garden beds with salvaged concrete blocks. North End Organic Nursery (NEON) donated three cubic yards of rich, fertile soil and Edwards Greenhouse donated cash the kids spent on pumpkin starts.

But someone else in his life hadn’t. When his mother heard about YOUTHWORKS!, she encouraged Dominic to apply. She felt the program would give him the help he needed to turn his life around.  Dominic did apply but only grudgingly, without much faith in whether it would work.  That changed, though, once he got really dove in and engaged.
