Complementary Apps for Teen Therapy

Welcome to your guide for the comprehensive list of apps to help you support your clients’ work outside of therapy sessions!

Using these apps, your clients can get the support they need between sessions (i.e., track their moods, identify their triggers, relieve some of their symptoms, etc.) without having to remember to bring a physical workbook or journal with them wherever they go. Here are some guidelines that will help you navigate through the apps so can you find the right one for your client:

There are 12 categories of apps: anxiety, CBT, DBT, depression, eating disorders, habits, journal, panic, relaxation, self-harm & safety plan, sleep, and trauma.

Some apps will be listed under multiple categories, as they have multiple features. Each app has a list of keywords underneath it, to help you quickly identify most of the features available within it. You can search for an app based on a therapeutic model (i.e., CBT or DBT), your client’s diagnosis (i.e., anxiety (and panic attacks), depression, eating disorders, sleep problems, or trauma), or by focusing on a specific coping skill or problem/intervention (i.e., improving daily habits, journaling, relaxation, self-harm, and safety plan).

For example, if your client has difficulty managing their anxiety-related symptoms, you can search the list of apps listed under the category “Anxiety.” All apps with anxiety-related content will be listed here; however, some apps on this list may also be found in other categories (i.e., “Panic” for panic attacks, “Trauma” for PTSD, “Relaxation” for guided meditations, mindfulness, and soundscapes/music, etc.). If your client has more difficulty with their depressive-related symptoms, you can search for apps listed under the category “Depression.” If you want more sleep-focused interventions for clients with depression, go to the category “Sleep” and look for apps with the keyword “depression.” Keywords are listed in alphabetical order.

As a side note, a couple apps have unique features (i.e., artificial intelligence (AI) where a chatbot communicates with the user via in-app messages, games to play for distraction, or group-style participation). You can find these apps using the keywords: AI, chatbot, games, and group respectively.

Finally, make sure you identify what platform your client will be downloading on: iOS (i.e., Apple App Store) or Android (i.e., Play Store). Please also note that not all apps are free and some of their prices vary slightly between platforms. Many of the apps on the list are free either entirely or partially (“freemium”). “Freemium” refers to apps that have some free content, but the user must pay for a subscription if they want to access all the content the app has to offer. There are only a few apps that are only useable if you pay to access content. Payments can range from a small fee to a subscription. Lastly, all the apps, categories, and keywords are in alphabetical order to help make the identification process easier.

10% HAPPIER: MEDITATION

The 10% Happier: Meditation app is designed to help users reduce stress and anxiety and improve their overall well-being through meditation. 5 MINUTE JOURNAL

The 5 Minute Journal app is designed to help users start their day with a positive and grateful mindset. It prompts users to reflect on things they’re grateful for and to set daily intentions. Additionally, the app provides daily affirmations and asks users to reflect on what would make the day great. At the end of the day, users are prompted to reflect on what went well and how they could have made the day even better. The app also allows users to attach photos to their daily entries. The app is available for free on both iOS and Android devices, with an option to subscribe to access additional features.

Aloe Bud is a self-care app that helps users cultivate mindfulness and better self-care habits. It encourages people to take care of themselves by providing personalized reminders to drink water, stretch, and take breaks throughout the day. The app also features guided meditations, relaxing sounds, and other wellness resources. Aloe Bud’s simple and visually pleasing interface makes it easy to use, and it offers a range of customizable features, including the ability to track mood and set goals. The app is available for free on iOS devices, with an option to purchase access to additional features.

ALAN MIND DAILY JOURNAL

Alan Mind Daily Journal (“Jour”) is a daily journaling app that aims to help users boost their mental health, increase their self-awareness, and enhance their personal growth. The app provides daily prompts, exercises, and activities that help users reflect on their emotions, experiences, and goals. Balance is available for both iOS and Android devices for free for access to limited content and offers a free trial period, after which a subscription is required.

BREATHE2RELAX

Breathe2Relax is a stress management app that teaches users how to use diaphragmatic breathing to reduce stress and anxiety. The app provides users with guided breathing exercises that help regulate the user’s breathing and heart rate. Breathe2Relax also includes educational resources about stress as well as progress tracking and customizable breathing settings. The app is available for free on both iOS and Android devices.

BRAIN.FM

Brain.fm is a music app that provides users with curated music designed to improve focus, relaxation, and sleep. The app offers a variety of tracks by using artificial intelligence and neuroscience to create music that can positively affect the brain’s state. Brain.fm also includes a timer feature and offline listening capabilities. The app is available for download on iOS and Android devices, with a free trial period (3 days) followed by a subscription fee to access features.
