THRIFT STORE MANAGER- Coeur d’Alene, Idaho

The store manager is responsible for the operations of store operations including staffing, supervision and training of others and various retail duties related to store upkeep and maintenance.

Responsible to: Vice President and Regional Administrators

TASK 1 OPENING AND CLOSING THE STORE

Opening:
  1. Count the money before placing it in the cash register.
  2. Do a store a walk-thru to find out the priorities for the day, organize daily work lists.
  3. Work with staff to complete daily cleaning list.
  4. Check perimeter of the building for donations, and bring them inside.
Closing:
  1. Complete bank deposits and related forms
  2. Check perimeter of the building for donations, and bring them inside
  3. Secure the building for the night.

TASK 2 SUPERVISING

  1. Make sure that all Staff are aware of their duties for the day;
  2. Make sure that all Seniors know their duties for the day;
  3. Give Community Service tasks as needed;
  4. Assign all Volunteers areas of responsibility, and assist them whenever necessary;
  5. Assign all workers areas of responsibility, making changes as needed to assist them in their training;
  6. Work with the Distribution drivers, assisting them whenever necessary;
  7. Handle personnel problems as they arise.

TASK 3 CUSTOMER AND PUBLIC RELATIONS

  1. Greet all Customers as they come into the store.
  2. Offer assistance whenever necessary.
  3. Handle customer problems and complaints, as needed.
  4. Always call your supervisor to inform them of any problems.
  5. Project a positive IYR image at all times.
  6. Have basic knowledge of all IYR programs.
  7. Have basic knowledge of the tax advantages of donating to the IYR.
  8. Work with the other IYR stores, facilities and programs to help reduce costs.
  9. Work with area agencies on voucher referrals.
  10. Ring up all sales and offer each customer a receipt.
  11. Answer the telephone in a friendly manner and offer assistance as needed.

TASK 4 MANAGING THE STORE

  1. Have the daily cleaning list is completed each morning.
  2. Do a daily walk-thru of the store to find out the priorities of the day.
  3. Assign all staff projects to complete.
  4. Get input from employees as to ways to increase sales.
  5. Keep track of the pick-up and delivery schedule, making sure that all information is accurate and complete. Make sure that we are not over scheduling.
  6. Accept all donations in a friendly manner. Instruct everyone as to where incoming donations should go.
  7. Keep the back room clean and organized.
  8. Sort, clean, price and display merchandise in a manner that will maximize its value.
  9. Do regular monthly markdowns.
  10. Do semi-annual season change-overs in a timely manner.
  11. Answer any questions and solve any problems as they arise.
  12. Mail out weekly random and yard sale letters.
  13. Keep the sidewalk, parking lot, sales floor and back room safe, at all times. Pick up any unsafe items. Notify Supervisor of any unsafe areas that can not be fixed immediately.
  14. Assure that the store making its monthly sales goals, and that expenses are staying within budgeted guidelines.
  15. Have adaptability to learn new procedures.
  16. Hire qualified staff.
  17. Train staff in all phases of the thrift store operation.
  18. Train staff in all areas of proper cash register operation.
  19. Set up and maintain an accurate filing system. Order supplies and forms as needed.
  20. Read, initial, complete, file and follow up on all memos from Administration.
  21. Set up employee schedules, to provide the maximum amount of coverage with the least amount of staff.
  22. Order weekly and monthly stock trucks.
  23. Order new merchandise, as needed, staying within budgeted guidelines.
  24. Refer to the Management Manual whenever necessary.
  25. Refer to the Supervisors Manual whenever necessary.
  26. Have knowledge of the IYR personnel policies, and follow company policy at all times.
  27. Complete supervisor’s work list in a timely manner.

TASK 5 PICK UP AND DELIVERY SCHEDULING

Pickups:
  1. Fill out pick up slips, completely, as customers call.
  2. Refer to the Management Manual for complete instructions.
  3. Mark it down so as not exceed weekly limit.
  4. Inform your drivers of any large time consuming pickups.
Deliveries:
  1. Fill out delivery slips, completely, as customers call.
  2. Refer to the Management Manual for complete instructions.
  3. Mark it down so as not exceed weekly limit, making sure to count it as 2 stops.
  4. Inform your drivers of any large time consuming deliveries.

TASK 6 PROCESSING DONATIONS

  1. Give non-cash receipt when receiving donations.
  2. Fill out the form legibly and completely.
  3. Refer to the Management Manual for complete instructions.
  4. Place items in their proper locations in the back room
  5. Clean, price and test hard lines and put them in the proper locations on the sales floor.
  6. Price, size and hang clothing. Put them in their proper location on the sales floor.
  7. Log in appliances when repaired units arrive.
  8. Assist in unloading the distribution truck.

TASK 7 STORE MAINTENANCE

  1. Clean front counter area
  2. Clean windows and doors
  3. Check jewelry case, fill and straighten as necessary.
  4. Clean and straighten sales floor daily.
  5. Check dressing rooms to make sure they are clean
  6. Clean and check clothing area, straighten and fill daily.
  7. Check hard line shelves to make sure they are clean and organized, fill daily.
  8. Check toy area to make sure it is clean and organized
  9. Vacuum store daily
  10. Clean up weeds and other debris around the perimeter of the building, as needed.
  11. Sweep sidewalks and parking lots, as needed.
  12. Clean break area and restrooms daily, and as needed.
  13. Clean and straighten the as-is area daily.
  14. Clean and straighten back room daily.

  9. This manual contains all information needed when selling donated vehicles.

TASK 9 OUTSIDE THE STORE DUTIES

  1. Attend Quarterly Management Meetings.
  2. Attend ANew Store@ set-ups and openings as requested by the Vice President.
  3. Travel to other locations to assist with the training of new managers, if requested by the Vice President or assistants.
  4. Attend monthly Chamber of Commerce meetings.
  5. Attend community functions that will increase the IYR visibility.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Must have a valid Idaho driver’s license (except for the Oregon Manager).
  3. Driving record must be acceptable to the insurance company.
  4. Must be able to lift at least 40 pounds.
  5. Must be able to work with little supervision.
  6. Must have good communication skills and organization skills
  7. Must have basic math, reading and writing skills.
