RESIDENTIAL CARE FOR ABUSED AND NEGLECTED YOUTH

Overview and Referral Information

The Idaho Youth Ranch program in Rupert provides long-term residential care to young people who are traumatized by abuse and/or neglect or an adverse experience, and as a result, this trauma interferes with their ability to control behavior and manage emotions. The program is based on an early intervention model to help at-risk youth who are in the beginning stages of behavior problems. The sliding fee schedule, coupled with donor-based support, accommodates youth and families who are not served through county or state-funded programs, and/or can’t afford the cost of care.

PROGRAM COMPONENTS

  • Family-like environment
  • Length of stay is minimum of one year
  • Education/vocation and structured recreation
  • Social skills and problem solving
  • Behavior management
  • Counseling - individual, group, and family
  • Drug and alcohol education
  • Equine therapy and 4-H livestock program

ADMISSIONS CRITERIA

  • Boys and girls ages 8 to 18 (preference given to ages 8-14)
  • Showing problems in several areas (i.e., family, peer relationships, community)
  • Learning disabled
  • Victims of abuse and/or neglect (physical, sexual, psychological)
  • Performing poorly in school
  • Living in homes where the parents/guardians are not able to effectively parent
  • Experiencing psychological problems interfering with their ability to control behavior and manage emotions; problems can be addressed without intensive psychiatric or clinical support. Examples of psychological problems include:
    • Depression
    • Moderate forms of conduct disorder
    • Episodes of post-traumatic stress disorder as the result of abuse
    • Certain biological forms of psychological problems (i.e. attention-deficit disorder)
  • Do not have extensive histories or established patterns of:
    • Out of home placement
    • Suicide attempts
    • Substance abuse
    • Assaultive behavior
    • Sexual acting-out
Referrals
  • Refer directly to IYR; not through contracts or state entities
  • Length of stay is determined by need
  • Cost is determined by a sliding scale; children will not be turned away due to an inability to pay
